Stamping's hottest new trend features small, simple stamps that are meant to be layered to create a full, individualized image.

Stamps by Judith, a family-owned business, has started a new stamping/scrapbooking trend with the manufacturing of small round stamps—some barely the diameter of a dime—mounted on tall, cylindrical sticks of wood for easier gripping. Ideally, these small stamps are meant to be used for layering.

How to Use Judith Stamps

Although the Judith line of stamps does contain many large stamps that print a completed image on their own, Judith stamps are best known for their conduciveness to layering. Many of the smaller, lower-priced stamps are meant to be double and triple stamped side by side and in multiple colors. For instance, there are several stamps resembling clumps of weeds that, when layered across the bottom of a card or a scrapbook page in greens and browns, can be transformed into a line of grass.

The same can be done with Judith’s flower designs. After stamping a simple flower pot or vase, stamp artists use a small flower stamp to create a bouquet by dipping the stamp in the ink once and then stamping the flower multiple times until the ink runs out. This leaves some of the flowers fainter than other, giving the bouquet texture and dimension.

There are many other layering designs to be created with single Judith stamps including stacked boxes, Christmas lights, and the famous coffee bean that has been used to make hearts, butterflies, ladybugs, and countless other illustrations. Indeed, the main idea behind stamp-layering is to create highly personalized images. Instead of buying one large stamp of a fixed sized and image, customers may now purchase smaller stamps that interact with each other can be used on surfaces of multiple sizes.

To help to generate creativity and fresh ideas, the company website (stampsbyjudith.com) has idea books, catalogs, and instructional DVDs available for order. Also, some local scrapbooking or stamping stores offer classes on how to best use Judith stamps.
