A selection of creative scrapbooking ideas and themes that center around girls and the things they enjoy doing.
Scrapbooking is a wonderfully creative pastime and a way to preserve precious memories of your daughter. Even people who would not call themselves creative have exceled in this craft. If you are just setting out or even if you are a seasoned scrapbooker, these ideas can inspire and point you to even more creativity.
One of the joys of scrapbooking is taking a theme and creating a page around it. Craft stores are full of accessories and half the fun is searching for the right background or image.
Photographs are the basis of a scrapbook, and this is the first thing needed. If you don’t have a selection on hand, grab the camera and keep it with you for the next few days. Take shots of your daughter in multiple settings and in different clothes. Look for natural poses and take close-up shots as well as distance ones. When you have a good number to work with, set them out in front of you and look for a distinguishing feature. Maybe a colourful flower or a striking sunset or water spraying from a hose or your daughter in a cute outfit. Allow ideas to spring from these features. Here are a few to get you going.
Flowers offer endless variety. Look for patterns in your daughter’s clothes that pick up on a floral theme. Use a rose print paper and include quotes about roses. Look for tiny silk flowers to include in your display. Press a petal or a flower and laminate it before attaching to the page. Floral themes work well with colors; vibrant orange and yellow, pastel pink and green, moody violet and navy. The options are endless.
This is a traditional look for little girls. Use ribbon to frame a page or include lace borders. Photos of your daughter in long, flowing dresses work well, and try gluing on tiny chains as neck and wrist accessories. Plain pastel backgrounds work well; include soft touches like baby feathers and tiny pearls.
Little girls love to play-act. Collect pictures of your little one dressed as a nurse, a chef or a teacher. Use stickers or cut out photos of an ambulance, a food mixer or a black board to form part of the background. Include little extras such as a tiny bandage, a cut-out food label or classroom stickers. Place your daughter in the middle of the page so she is the focal point.
Most girls love animals, and a family pet can be a great theme. If you don’t have one, ask if you can photograph a neighbor’s pet. Look for shots of her mothering the cat or snuggling with the dog. Get her to pose with the bird or lie face-to-face with the hamster. Page accessories can include paw prints, outdoor backgrounds and earthy shades and textures.
Treat your daughter to a beauty day and record the results; curlers in hair, mirror in hand, lipstick and blush on her face. This would be a good page on which to preserve a lock of hair. Use backgrounds and accessories to accentuate your child’s coloring. If she has ginger hair, choose pumpkins and hay or spices and autumn shades.
These are just a few ideas, but the choice is endless. Whatever you choose, a scrapbook will be a much-loved memento of a period in your child’s life. Why not make one for each year?
