The scope for travel scrapbooks is limitless. Themes can range from classical to downright zany, depending on the type of holiday being recorded.

The important thing is to record the vacation in such a way as to stir memories and bring them to life for others. There are many ways to do this and a combination of techniques can create a fabulous work of art.

Albums

Travel pages can deviate from the standard album size. Try a smaller page size or use thick card as page backings and store in a miniature suitcase. The theme can be extended to include the suitcase and if necessary, the decoration can be sealed with decoupage varnish. Another idea is to make circular pages joined by a chain or gold cord.

Country or City

Choose whether to highlight a whole range of destinations like a tour of Europe would encompass, or just a week at the beach with family. A world tour type book could devote one page to each city or a double page to a country. The beach type holiday could have a page per day or a page per activity.

Theme

There are many themes that work with vacations. Consider highlighting museums or natural wonders, or theme parks or world famous landmarks. There is also a great choice of tone. Think of humorous, romantic, the intrepid traveller, cartoon or green.

Cardstock

Choose the background page to fit in with the theme. This can be done by careful choice of colour and texture. A skiing holiday will look good against silver or blue cardstock whereas a trip through the Amazon lends itself to textured greens. A safari in Africa would work with ivory cardstock to pick up on elephant tusks. Another idea is to use maps of the area as a background. Cardstock can be torn to form a background of hills or mountains.

Scenes

Compose each page as a scene or amalgamation of scenes from the trip. This can be done by gathering all the photographs and bits and pieces and experimenting with layouts and ideas.

What to Include

  • Itinerary
  • Copies of passports
  • Foreign Currency
  • Postcards
  • Dried flowers
  • Stamps
  • Newspaper cuttings
  • Tickets
  • Passes
  • Maps
  • Brochures

Scrapbook Accessories

There are many stickers and embellishments available for travel scrapbooks. Look for luggage labels, suitcases, travel words and transport and incorporate these into the design. Sometimes they add the finishing touch and pull a page together perfectly.

Journaling

Add thoughts and feelings to each page. These could be inscribed on a luggage label or suitcase sticker. Keep it simple; statements such as “The Pyramids stretched in every direction, making me feel like a mouse.” or “The snow was crunchy and crisp under our feet.” are ideal.

Travel photos can be boring for other people to look at but a beautifully created scrapbook can be enjoyed by anyone. Preserve special trips and relive the memories over and over.
