Resist Techniques for Paper Crafts

Images That Pop

Jazz up paper projects with these simple resist techniques.

It’s easy to create batik-style artwork using a resist method. This simple technique can create subtle “ghosting” for background artwork, or striking images for a central theme. There are a number of ways to produce this effect, but these are three simple ways to get started with tools that are easy to find. They create slightly different results, so make sure to try them all and see which works best for a particular current project.

Using resist ink pads:

  1. Start with white or light-colored glossy card stock.
  2. Stamp the image using resist ink.
  3. Heat set the image using a heat gun (this is optional).
  4. Brayer or blot ink over the entire image until the stamped image shows through. The background color will shine through. At this point, it is a good idea to heat set the entire image to help it dry.

Tips:

Using embossing powder:

  1. Stamp the image using embossing ink or another slow-drying ink.
  2. Working quickly, sprinkle embossing powder over the wet image.
  3. Shake off excess embossing powder and set the powder using a heat gun.
  4. Brayer the ink over the entire image. If desired, use a soft cloth to wipe excess ink off embossed image.

Tips:

Using Repositional Adhesive

  1. Cover the back of a plain sheet of paper with a repositional (non-permanent) adhesive. Options include a Xyron machine, spray adhesive or non-permanent glue stick.
  2. Cut out images from plain paper using paper punches, a die cut machine, or good old-fashioned scissors. Be careful to clean the tools carefully afterward so the adhesive doesn’t ruin them.
  3. Place the images on the craft paper in a pleasing pattern. A light cardstock or heavy duty paper is best for this particular technique. Make sure the cut-outs are properly adhered so that the ink won’t seep underneath.
  4. Brayer, spray, brush, or dab ink across the page.
  5. When dry, carefully remove the cut-outs from the page.

Tips:

Don’t be afraid to play with these techniques, combine them, rearrange the steps, and just have fun. Some of the best pieces may result from experiment and trial and error. Try unusual color combinations, and unusual stamp images to see what will result. Even the least favorite results will probably find a home in a collage or a background image in a future project.
