Woven heart pockets are a quick way to make last minute Valentine's gifts without spending money.

Use scrap paper and your hands to make these whimsical woven heart pockets for Valentine’s Day. Woven heart pockets are the perfect way to present Valentine notes and treats to those you love. While these simple little pockets can easily be made with construction paper, why not challenge your creativity and recycle some papers to make unique hearts with a real message.

Supplies

  • Paper
  • Scissors
  • Craft Knife
  • Glue
  • Pen

Instructions

  1. Cut two identical rectangles, with the dimensions of 21-22 centimeters by 8 centimeters, out of your paper.
  2. Round off the corners of the rectangle – a small sized tin can makes a good guide for rounding the corners(See Figure 1).
  3. Fold a rectangle in half. Draw three lines perpendicular to the fold. The lines need to be two centimeters apart and eight centimeters long (See Figure 1).
  4. With the rectangle still folded – cut the lines.
  5. On the second rectangle, draw the same lines. However, do not cut through both layers. Open up the oblong and use the craft knife to cut the lines on one half of the oblong, but not through to the other half (See Figure 2).
  6. With the first oblong folded and the second open, weave the two pieces of paper together (See Figure 2).
  7. When the pieces are completely woven together, glue the loose edges down to form the pocket.
  8. Cut a scrap of paper for the handle. Glue in place.

Ideas and Suggestions

  1. If you are not handy with a craft knife, use your scissors make a small cut on the fold (similar to how you would have started the cuts for the first oblong). Then unfold the oblong and finish the cuts only on the one half.
  2. Hang a heart on your child's door as a Valentine's morning surprise.
  3. Slip a pocket into your husband's lunch box.
  4. Write mottos that are puns on the papers you used as your Valentine greeting.

  • For instance, if you used a map for your heart, write mottos such as: The Map in My Heart Found You, You Found Your Way into My Heart, Here are the Directions to My Heart (and write a love note to put in the pocket).
  • If you use music pages for your heart, write mottos such as: You Make My Heart Sing, My Heart Heard Music When I First Saw You, You Are the Music My Heart Hears.
  • If you use newsprint for your heart, write a motto such as: News Flash: I Love You.
  • If you use paper bags for your heart, write a motto such as: You’ve Bagged my Heart.
