Using basic craft supplies, handmade party hats add a personal touch to birthdays.

Passing out cone-shaped hats as guests come through the door is a favorite birthday party tradition. Hats add a unique touch to birthdays, look a little silly on people’s heads and come in tons of festive options. It is easy to find party hats to match any theme, but it is also fun to make them. Even if you can’t make hats for everyone, create one especially for the birthday boy to personalize his special day.

Homemade Party Hats

Making party hats for birthdays is easy with basic craft supplies. Even self-proclaimed non-crafty types can create this special birthday party accessory. Start in the scrapbook paper aisle of any craft store. Choosing the color and pattern of paper to match the party is the most difficult part. Here is how to make a birthday party hat.

Materials

  • 8 x 10 sheet of scrapbook paper in color and pattern to match the party theme
  • paper party hat pattern found at Crafty Secrets
  • double-sided tape
  • glue
  • single-hole punch
  • ribbon, yarn or string

Directions

  1. Print and cut out the paper party hat pattern.
  2. Trace the pattern onto the back of the 8 x 10 sheet of scrapbook paper.
  3. Cut out the pattern.
  4. Use the glue or double-sided tape to connect the sides of the paper.
  5. With this seam in the back, punch one hole on each side of hat.
  6. Cut two lengths of ribbon approximately one foot each.
  7. Make a knot in one end of each piece and thread the other end through the hat. You may also want to glue the ribbon inside the hat for additional support.

Other Party Hat Ideas

After putting together the basic birthday hat, why not dress it up a little? These ideas take homemade party hats from plain to wow. There are also a couple of tips for buying party hats that look handmade if the do-it-yourself option doesn’t work out.

  • Top off paper party hats with a playful tissue paper fringe.
  • Add a row of colorful pom-pom fringe to the bottom of a paper hat.
  • Cut out the age or initial of the birthday girl from coordinating paper and glue to the front of the hat.
  • If the pattern on the paper hat is not too bold, use glitter, stamps sequins, beads and stickers for additional decoration.
  • For someone with sewing skills, using fabric or felt in place of paper makes excellent party hats for birthdays.
  • Search craft stores and online boutiques for party hats made of fabric or felt. These look handmade and are the next best thing to doing it yourself.

Making party hats are a simple way to personalize any birthday. Choose a paper style that matches the party theme to create a fun and unique look. Coordinate the party hat with other homemade birthday party decorations for a truly customized celebration.
