Looking for DIY gift ideas this holiday season? Learn to make beautiful homemade gift frames using easy-to-find scrapbook and craft supplies.

Making hand-crafted gifts has never been easier! Just follow these simple steps to create personalized picture frames for friends and family.

Gathering Supplies to Get Started

Head out to the nearest craft store to begin this project. The key supply is an unfinished wooden picture frame. These come in various sizes, including 12” x 12” (which holds a 5” x 7” photo) and 7” x 9” (which holds a 4” x 6” photo). A container of Mod Podge (either matte or glossy will do) and a couple of sponge brushes are also necessary.

Scrapbook papers and embellishments can be found at the craft store or a specialty scrapbook store. At least two 12” x 12” sheets of coordinating papers should be purchased for each frame. Embellishments can range from stickers to buttons, from ribbons to rhinestones, and from chipboard to metal. Glue dots or other adhesive should be used to attach embellishments.

Certain embellishments such as brads, eyelets, or conchos could create bubbling, so they should probably be avoided. The sides of the frame can be dyed to coordinate with the paper using a sponge dauber and an ink pad of a similar color.

Assembling the Gift

1. Remove glass and easel back from the frame. Decide which paper will be the base layer. Turn the base paper upside down and place the frame over the paper with the front side down.

2. With a pencil, lightly trace the photo opening onto the paper. If the frame is smaller than 12” x 12”, trace the outer edge of the frame also.

3. Using sharp pointed scissors carefully cut out the photo opening. Trim paper to match the frame size, if necessary.

4. Decide the rest of the design's coordinating paper sizes and embellishments. Measure and cut remaining papers and set aside.

5. Place the frame on a sheet of newspaper. Sponge the ink onto the edges of the frame and let dry.

6. Apply thin layer of Mod Podge to the front of the frame. Place base layer of paper over wet Mod Podge and smooth out the entire surface.

7. A layer of Mod Podge must be applied under each layer of paper. Another layer should go over the top of the final sheet or piece of scrapbook paper.

8. Embellishments should be attached last.

Presenting a Special Gift

Everyone appreciates receiving a gift that has been hand-crafted especially for him or her. In this season of economic hardship, making gifts is an easy way to save money. Enjoy crafting these frames for loved ones this year. Then bask in their joy as they open their packages!
